From Campus Radio to Island Wide Media

The story of NCU Media Group begins in a humble, almost quiet way, long before the lights, the reach, and the recognition. In the late 1990s, when Northern Caribbean University was still known as West Indies College, a simple but powerful idea took root: to create a space where voices could be heard, stories could be told, and students could learn by doing. That idea became a reality in 1999 with the launch of WIC Radio 88.3 FM, a modest station powered by just 100 watts, serving mainly the campus and its immediate community. Its sound was steady and comforting, built around a rotating selection of gospel music that reflected both the institution’s values and its audience.

That same year, the college transitioned to university status, and with that shift came a broader vision. This small radio station was no longer just a signal, it became a classroom without walls, a living lab for Mass Communication students, and a foundation for something much bigger.

Growth didn’t happen overnight, but it was always intentional.

In 2001, the University took a bold step and applied for an all-island commercial broadcasting licence. It would take several years, but in March 2009, that vision was realized. With the licence granted, WIC Radio evolved into NCU FM, a rebrand that signaled not just a new name, but a new era.

The transformation became tangible in November 2010. With the commissioning of two 4000-watt transmitters, one in Huntley, Manchester (91.1 FM) and another in Coopers Hill, St. Andrew (91.3 FM), NCU FM expanded from a limited campus signal to a voice heard across Jamaica. Programming grew with it, shifting from limited broadcast hours to a full 24-hour schedule, complete with news, talk, features, and music that informed, uplifted, and connected communities island-wide.

And people were listening.

Over the years, NCU FM steadily climbed the ranks in the All Media Survey, moving from 11th place in 2012 to 8th in 2014, and then to 7th in 2016. Each step forward reflected not just growing listenership, but growing trust.

But the story doesn’t stop at radio.

Recognizing the power of visual storytelling and the need to showcase student creativity, NCU expanded into television. In June 2005, NCU TV was launched on Wilson’s Cable, bringing a new dimension to the University’s media presence. By December 2009, it had secured a 24-hour island-wide presence on the FLOW network, channel 188, now 617, further extending its reach and impact.

Today, NCU Media Group stands as more than a broadcaster. It is a training ground, a platform, and a partner. Beyond radio and television, the Group offers multimedia services to individuals, organizations, and brands, helping them tell their stories with clarity, creativity, and purpose.

At its heart, however, the mission remains the same as it was in 1999: to inform, to inspire, and to empower; transforming lives through Education and Wellness.
